From very early on Jim has had a fascination for things “Cultural and Humerous”. In all of his shows, both of these features are incorporated in a very unique and entertaining way.
Jim’s act, which combines traditional music with master storytelling, has been entertaining audiences both at home and abroad for many years now (“From Fermoy to Philadelphia”, as Gay Byrne put it!).
Jim has been involved in the Folk and Traditional circuit since the 1970’s, both as solo artist and supporting such names as Christy Moore, Don McLean, Moving Hearts, Planxty, The Wolfe Tones, Mary Black and Stocktons Wing. In recent times, however, Jim has taken to the screen!
Among his T.V. appearances to date are Screen Test ’85 where he first came to national prominence. He was also a guest on the Cork 800 Gala Concert which was televised live on R.T.E. on New Years Eve ’86 and of course The Late Late Show audience and viewers will not forget his hilarious performance on that programme. In recent times, he has also had a number of successful trips and tours to parts of England, Canada and the US.
When not abroad, Jim enthralls the masses here in Ireland on the concert, cabaret, conference and festival circuit, where from time to time his performances have been noted very favorably by the national press and often captured by visiting T.V. and video crews.
On R.T.E. radio, presenters with whom he featured include Mike Murphy, Valerie McGovern, Derek Davies and John Skehan, to mention but a few.
Without doubt, a master storyteller, a joy to watch, a memory that lingers, Jim Maher is one of the finest and most popular entertainers in his class, at the present time.
Traditional roguery of the sort that makes us long for those by-gone days of fun and mirth …. where laughter was heard and cherished at every hearth, every ditch and gate post …. Jim Maher takes us back in time …. to the world of storytelling where authenticity is the order of the day. His stories remind us of what is in us all …. a roguish sense of humour, a taste for life …. our total “Irishness”.
The beat of the bodhran, the glint in the eye, the narrative perfection. All of these are hits …. to share with us, to rock us back in time with tear-faced hilarity. Through Jim’s delivery we see ourselves, as a people, unique in our heritage, unspoiled by artificiality, proud of our gift “to tell it as it really happened”
